Open Broadband-UDP Speed Test (OB-UDPST)

OB-USPST.png

The OB-UDPST (Open Broadband - User Datagram Protocol Speed Test) project is an open source implementation of a tool to perform the metrics defined in TR-471 IP Layer Capacity Metrics and Measurement. The OB-UDPST project provides detailed IP capacity performance measurements and can serve as an important element in a service provider’s QoE measurement framework.

Attributes include:

  • Normalization of measurements across different network protocols, access technologies, and vendor products

  • Precise and direct control of load traffic as well as the response to congestion indications

  • Direct visibility to network impairments (latency, loss, etc.) while testing

  • Measurements that are not disproportionately influenced by RTT (Round-Trip Time) and packet loss

  • Less kernel overhead and higher-density test servers

  • Customization of test behavior for specific services or environments (i.e., transmission aggressiveness, congestion sensitivity, max test duration,…)

  • Simpler client development and enhancement rollouts (due to server-centric rate control)

  • Test & turn-up and post-repair soak testing via static sending rates (e.g., 90% of max)

  • Frequent or long-duration impairment and reliability checks via low-rate testing (e.g., 100 Kbps)
